Richard Garriott, Father of UO, Buys Virtual
Items
In an
article with Escapist, Richard Garriott, creator of the Ultima
series, gave his opinions on the sale of virtual items and how it
affects games. He describes how virtual item sellers are
inevitable as the items in game hold real value given the effort to
acquire them. To our surprise, among his detailed opinions of
affects of the virtual item sellers, he mentioned that he himself
has purchased virtual items.
"I buy virtual gold all the time,"
"I have no problem with it. I'm a supporter. I understand
that my position on this is different from our sole corporate
perspective. But anyway, I participate in it."
His response, perhaps against what many game
companies and developers believe, shows us that there is nothing
wrong with RMT. The virtual items take time and effort to
acquire. This essentially gives them real world value and
therefore are worth real money to those who do not have the time to
spend in game searching for the items.
