Study Shows about 22% of Gamers Buy Virtual
Currency...in 2005!
A
study done by MMO researcher Nick Yee shows that 22% of those
interviewed have purchased in game currency. Unfortunately,
this result is a bit dated. The information was compiled in
2005. From our experience with other gamers throughout the
years, as many as 30% may now be purchasing virtual currency and as
many as 40% of gamers are using one of the services rated on our
website. However, because we do not have proof we will stick
to the numbers produced by Nick Yee in 2005. In the study Nick
reports.
"In a recent survey (N = 1923), 22% of respondents said that they
had purchased virtual currency"
"Overall, those players who have purchased virtual currency have
spent on average 135 USD altogether."
The study
also shows that those who were most likely to purchase virtual
currency were adults old enough to have a career. This makes
sense, as those who have a decent job value their time.
Grinding for gold is time that might be better spent elsewhere.
